Is there a food made specifically for Golden Retrievers?
Royal Canin makes Golden Retriever adult and puppy dry formulas, plus an adult canned loaf. Its adult dry formula lists corn, chicken by-product meal and wheat first, with 23% minimum protein. Royal Canin's pages show no AAFCO statement for the dry formulas, so check the bag or ask the brand.
What should I look for in a Golden Retriever puppy food?
Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center advises feeding diets formulated for large breeds while growing and avoiding overfeeding. The AKC puts adult males at 65 to 75 pounds, near AAFCO's 70 pound line. Look for the phrase "including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)" on the label. Your veterinarian decides for your dog.
When does a Golden switch from puppy to adult food?
Brands differ. Royal Canin feeds its Golden Retriever puppy formula up to 15 months, while Hill's labels its large-breed puppy food for dogs over 55 pounds as adults up to 18 months. We found no vet-school or parent-club age, so ask your veterinarian.
Are grain-free foods a problem for Goldens?
The FDA's Q&A cites 1,382 DCM reports in dogs submitted from January 2014 to November 2022. Reports involve grain-free and grain-containing diets, and the FDA says report counts alone do not show cause. The Golden Retriever Club of America says Goldens appear particularly susceptible to taurine deficiency, so discuss diet with your veterinarian.
How do I judge calories and portions on a label?
Check the kcal per cup. Royal Canin lists 278 kcal per cup for its Golden Retriever adult dry food, and Hill's lists 365 kcal per cup for Adult Large Breed. Cup for cup, the two differ, so treat label feeding guides as starting points and adjust with your veterinarian as your dog's weight changes.
